Going on a cruise for the first time can be simultaneously exciting and overwhelming. There are so many details to see to before you even get to the ship. Knowing how to prepare for a cruise in advance will make things less stressful.
Being informed about your chosen cruise line and the specific ship on which you will travel is a good way to ensure there are no surprises about what happens once you are aboard. The cruise line most likely has a detailed website that can be sought for specific information such as ship layout and details pertaining to meals, events and excursions.
Knowing how to prepare for a cruise is easily half the battle, for once you have done some research and made your lists, you are ready to prepare and pack. How does one go about preparing for a cruise beyond choosing the trip? There are several things to do in the days leading up to the ship's departure.
- Ensure you have obtained all necessary documents. These documents include proper identification, which is a driver's license and a passport (if your cruise route includes international waters or excursions). It is also a good idea to carry along insurance cards and medical information in the event of an unfortunate illness or injury while away.
- Take along any medications, both prescription and over the counter medications you may need for the duration of the trip. Many doctors will write an extra prescription in order to allow you to carry extras of your medication when traveling. There will be no way to replenish a supply or replace lost medications once at sea, so this is a very good idea.
- Be sure to pack appropriate clothing for the entire trip. Most cruise ship vacations cover a variety of events from formal dinners to casual meals, excursions that require good footware and seasonal clothing, swimming gear and so forth.
- Pack your carry on carefully. When boarding the ship, your luggage will be taken off to be put on board separate from you. By packing a carry on with everything you might need for a day, you do not have to be concerned in the event that it takes a few hours for your luggage to reach your ship cabin. This includes clothing changes, medications, a book, cash and such 'hands on' items you may need.
By taking the time to think about how to prepare for a cruise, all your needs and wants will be prepared for and the vacation you have worked for and anticipated will be one full of fun times and good memories.
